Heung-Min Son: His best moments in a Spurs shirt
Son Heung-Min has captivated the minds of many, old and young, for the last decade. He will be remembered as one of the greatest finishers in Premier League history, with a wand of a right foot as well as a dangerous 'weaker' left. Throughout his time in North London, he formed an unstoppable partnership with ex-teammate Harry Kane, putting the pair in debates as being the greatest duo the league has ever seen.
Despite all his talent, Sonny will be remembered most for being an extraordinarily kind human being, treating his teammates, fans and opponents with unwavering respect and humility, traits that are becoming less and less common in modern football.
So sit back, get your tissues ready to wipe away tears as we look back at Son's best moments at Tottenham Hotspur.
10) Backheel magic versus Watford
In his debut season, Son was struggling to match the quality he had shown in Germany the season prior. At 23-years-old, not being able to speak the language very well, low on confidence and constantly in and out of the side, Son came on off the bench to score a late winner versus Watford and in spectacular style.
A lovely cross onto the edge of the six-yard-box by Kieran Trippier allowed Son to backheel the ball on the volley into the Watford net. This resulted in Spurs moving into the Champions League spots for the very first time under Pochettino. In my eyes, this moment defined Son and gave him the confidence to really push on.
9) Solo brilliance versus Chelsea
The late 2010's era saw Tottenham develop an even more intense rivalry with Chelsea due to the fact both clubs were competing in the latter stages of most competitions, and Arsenal were going through an unstable period.
In 2018/19 at Wembley Stadium, Son produced a moment of sheer brilliance that stunned the Chelsea away end whilst simultaneously sending the home crowd ballistic.
Picking up the ball near the halfway line, Son spun past Jorginho in midfield before dummying David Luiz and cutting inside in the 18-yard-box. Chelsea keeper Kepa was left helpless as Son tucked his shot away into the bottom left corner. Tottenham went on to cruise past Chelsea in an important 3-1 win at home.
8) Olimpico versus Manchester United
Performance wise, the 2024/25 season was one to forget for the Tottenham captain, with injuries as well as a decline in form. Ultimately this dip contributed to his desire of wanting a fresh start in a different league.
However, Son was more than capable of still popping up with moments of magic, he demonstrated this in the whirlwind that was Tottenham versus Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.
Son produced a corner kick that caught out the entire Manchester United side, curling the ball into the net directly from the corner, this turned out to be the decisive goal in a 4-3 win for Spurs. His Olimpico did confirm one thing: Son only scores screamers.
7) A rocket versus West Ham
Carrying on the theme of Son only scoring screamers, his equaliser versus West Ham in 2017/18 is no exception.
At around the 30-yard mark, Son was given enough space to unwind an unstoppable effort at goal into the top right corner. As the ball flew in the air, it dipped, curved, fizzed and arrowed far out of reach of the Hammers keeper.
And to top it off, Son shushed the away crowd who had been hurling abuse at him all game as if scoring a goal like that was a regular occurrence, which, with Son it was.
6) First goalscorer at the new stadium
Son has scored some important goals during his time at Tottenham, and this one is certainly up there. Spurs were struggling to break down a stubborn Crystal Palace low-block all game, and just as the points looked destined to be shared between the two sides, Eriksen found Son in space before the Korean drilled the ball into the bottom corner.
This marked an exciting new era of football at Tottenham, and what better way for the first goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to be scored by one of the clubs all-time greats.
5) Becoming the all-time assist holder at Spurs
When you think of players with many assists at Tottenham, you instantly think of Eriksen, Bale or depending on how long you have supported the club, Glenn Hoddle.
But believe it or not, it's Heung-Min Son that holds the all-time assist record at Tottenham Hotspur. In the Premier League, Son registered 71 assists, beating the record of 66 against Southampton, and once again, a beautiful assist claimed the record.
With the outside of his foot, Son whipped a trivela pass into the path of James Maddison who mid-slip fired the ball into the top corner. Spurs eventually won the game 5-0 and Son wrote his name once more into the Tottenham history books.
4) Puskas winner vs Burnley
Perhaps his best and most famous goal of his career. When people talk about Son's goal catalogue, this goal is always the first talking point. The easiest assist of Jan Vertonghen's career was converted by Son who wriggled his way through the entire Burnley team from deep within his own half before calmly tucking the ball into the bottom corner.
His ability to maintain such a high speed over a distance as big as nearly three-quarters of the pitch whilst also keeping the ball under such close control earnt him the Puskas Award, meaning the winner of scoring the most 'aesthetically significant' or 'beautiful goal' of the year
3) Winning the Golden Boot
Heung-Min Son's best goalscoring season came in the 2021/22 season under Antonio Conte. Son tied with Liverpool's Mo Salah with 23 goals each to claim the award.
What made this achievement even more impressive was the fact Son played alongside Harry Kane in his prime, who would have split the goals a considerable amount, and also that Son didn't take or score a single penalty goal. Every goal Son scored that season was from open play, a testament to just how good a goalscorer he was.
2) 'Do you know who I am'
Tottenham found themselves up against one of the greatest Manchester City sides in the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final, and they had to do so without Harry Kane for the last 35 minutes.
The absence of the Englishmen was glaringly obvious to the Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, who referred to Tottenham as 'the Harry Kane team' in a press conference prior to the game.
In a tightly contested affair, the score was 0-0 with 15 minutes to play. Son did well to keep a ball lofted into his path by Eriksen in play before firing his effort into the back of the net. Son made his way to the camera before screaming 'do you know who I am,' aiming a sly dig at Guardiola and his comments in the build-up to the game.
To make matters worse, Son scored a brace in the away leg, again without Harry Kane, which eventually led to Man City being knocked out of the tournament.
1) *THAT* trophy lift
After a decade of blood, sweat, tears and unwavering loyalty, Heung Min-Son finally got his moment of glory with the club that adores him. After 17 long years, Son and co ended Spurs' trophy drought, winning the Europa League, a competition the club had not won in over 40 years.
Whilst other star players moved onto other challenges, Son kept to his word that he would deliver silverware to the fans who have supported him the last 10 years. He himself said he can now class himself as a Spurs legend now that he completed this feat, however if you asked most fans they would say he already was.
Whilst saying goodbye to a club great is hard and sad to see, it's an essential part of the sporting business and life. Time is precious, it's finite. Age eventually catches up to everyone, no matter who they are. What was beautiful to see however, was Son finally get to lift a trophy and bow out off the main stage on a monumental high.
